Electric scooter stopped mid-ride: what to do and what to avoid
Flat battery, fault light or no response: what is safe to try, and how we tow EVs.
What to do right now
- 1
Read the display. Many EV scooters show a warning or a fault code. Note it or photograph it.
- 2
Switch off, wait two minutes, then try again. Some faults clear after a restart.
- 3
Check the side stand and the brake sensors. Many EVs will not move with the stand down or with a brake lever held.
- 4
Let a hot scooter cool in the shade. If the battery area smells odd, looks swollen or is very hot, step away and call the manufacturer's helpline.
- 5
Make yourself visible. A silent scooter is hard for traffic to notice. Use the hazard lights and stay off the carriageway.
- 6
Be honest about the range. Hills, a pillion rider and a sport ride mode all shorten it, and the figure on the display is an estimate.
How we help

An electric scooter that stops mid-ride has usually run out of charge, overheated, or hit a fault that the display reports. It is rarely a fault you can fix at the roadside, but it is often easy to diagnose.
This page covers the checks that are safe to try, the one situation where you should not charge the battery, and how we move an EV without harming the motor.
We load an electric scooter with the drive wheel supported, so the motor is never turned without power. We ask about warning lights, battery condition and whether the scooter got wet. Then we take it to a charging point, an authorised service centre or your home.
Some manufacturers offer roadside assistance with the scooter. If yours does, it is worth calling them too. Call us if they cannot reach you quickly or if you would rather have the scooter taken straight home.
If it simply ran flat, there is nothing wrong with the scooter, and the tow is the quickest way to a charger. If it overheated, got wet or shows a battery fault, we take it to a service centre and advise you not to charge it first.
Electric scooters are moved by our scooty and EV towing service with the drive wheel supported. For a petrol scooty with a flat battery, roadside assistance can try a jump-start first, and motorcycles go by our bike towing service.
What to tell us when you call
- Make and model
- The warning light or message on the display
- Whether it got wet or was in an accident
- The battery level when it stopped
- Where it is, and where you want it taken
What not to do
- Do not let anyone pull it on its drive wheel. Turning the motor without power can stress it. A platform avoids the question.
- Do not open the battery cover or touch exposed wiring. Leave that to a technician.
- Do not keep riding to see how far it goes. A battery warning is a reason to stop, not a challenge.
Frequently asked questions
Can you tow an Ola, Ather or iQube scooter?
Yes. Tell us the model. We load all electric scooters with the drive wheel supported.
Is it safe to charge it after it stopped?
If it simply ran flat, yes. If it overheated, got wet or shows a battery fault, do not charge it until a technician checks it.
My scooter has power but will not move. Why?
Check the side stand, the brake levers and any ride-mode setting. If those are fine, it needs a service centre.
Will towing affect my warranty?
Flatbed transport should not. Keep the photos and the tow details, and check your warranty terms or ask the manufacturer.
