Your bike will not start. Work through this before you call

Six quick checks, what the symptoms mean, and when to stop trying.

What to do right now

  1. 1

Check the kill switch and the side stand. The red kill switch on the handlebar and the side-stand sensor both cut the ignition. Flip the switch and fold the stand fully.

  2. 2

Look at the fuel. A reserve you did not notice, or a petcock left off on an older bike, is a common cause.

  3. 3

Turn the key and watch the lights. Bright lights and a loud click point to the starter or the engine. Dim lights and a slow click point to a weak battery.

  4. 4

Try the kick starter if you have one. If the bike starts with a kick but not with the button, the battery is the problem.

  5. 5

Pull the clutch lever fully. Many bikes will not start with the lever released while in gear.

  6. 6

Smell for petrol. A strong smell after several tries means the engine may be flooded. Wait ten minutes with the throttle closed and try again.

How we help

Motorcycle strapped onto a flatbed tow truck on a Bangalore street, the way we move a bike that will not start

Most bikes that will not start have one of four simple problems: a flat battery, no fuel reaching the engine, a switch in the wrong position, or a blocked spark. You can check three of them in two minutes without any tools.

This page walks through them in the order most likely to save you a call, and tells you when to stop and tow.

If the quick checks do not work, stop trying. Repeated cranking drains the battery and can flood the engine, which turns a simple fault into a longer one.

Call us and describe what you saw: dim lights, a click, no sound at all or a smell of petrol. If it needs a workshop, we tow the bike to your garage or service centre.

We tow bikes that will not start from roadsides, parking lots, basements and home gates, and we give you a realistic wait time on the call.

If the battery is the likely cause, we can try a jump-start on the spot. If the bike starts, get the battery tested soon, because a weak battery tends to fail again.

If the checks point to a flat battery, our roadside assistance can try a jump-start on the spot. If the bike still will not start, the bike towing service takes it to a garage; for a scooter, see scooty and EV towing.

What to tell us when you call

  • What the bike does when you press the starter: nothing, a click, or it cranks
  • Whether the lights and the horn work
  • The fuel level, and whether you smelled petrol
  • Make, model and the age of the battery, if you know it
  • Where the bike is, and where you want it taken

What not to do

  • Do not crank for more than a few seconds at a time. Long cranking drains the battery and heats the starter motor.
  • Do not try to push-start an automatic scooter. Scooters with an automatic gearbox generally cannot be push-started, and trying can strain the drive belt.
  • Do not ignore a burning smell or smoke. Disconnect the battery if you can reach it safely, step away and wait for help.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my bike click but not start?

A single loud click usually means the battery has some charge but the starter cannot turn the engine. Fast clicking or no light means a weak battery. A mechanic should check both.

How long should I wait if the engine is flooded?

Ten to fifteen minutes with the throttle closed is a common starting point. If the bike still does not start, it needs checking.

Is it worth jump-starting an old battery?

Only to get home. A battery that failed once will fail again, so have it tested or replaced soon.

When should I stop and call a tow?

If the quick checks fail, if you smell burning, or if the bike is in an unsafe spot, stop and call.

Stuck right now?

Tell us where you are and what the bike is doing. You get an honest estimate before the truck leaves.
